Food Guidelines for a Daniel Fast

Daniel Fasted:

Daniel 10:2-3 “2 In those days I Daniel was mourning (fasting) three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”


Participants of the fast may follow a restricted raw vegetable and fruit meal plan. Food restrictions is a personal choice, however the goal of a fast is eating in moderation in order to increase your spiritual food intake of prayer and studying the Bible.


Foods You May Eat:

  • Whole Grains:
    Brown Rice, Oats, Barley
  • Legumes:
    Dried Beans, Pinto Beans, Split Peas, Lentils, Black Eyed Peas
  • Fruits:
    Apples, Apricots, Bananas, Blackberries, Blueberries, Boysenberries, Cantaloupe, Cherries, Cranberries, Oats, Figs, Grapefruit, Grapes, Guava, Honeydew Melon, Kiwi, Lemons, Limes, Mangoes, Nectarines, Papayas, Peaches, Pears, Pineapples, Plums, Prunes, Raisins, Raspberries, Strawberries, Tangelos, Tangerines, Watermelon, Avocados
  • Vegetables:
    Artichokes, Asparagus, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chili Peppers, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Garlic, Gingerroot, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard Greens, Okra, Onions, Parsley, Potatoes, Radishes, Rutabagas, Scallions, Spinach, Sprouts, Squashes, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini, veggie burgers are an option if you not allergic to soy.
  • Liquids:
    Spring Water, Distilled Water, 100% All-Natural Fruit Juices, 100% All Natural Vegetable Juices. You may also drink protein drinks.
  • Others:
    Seeds, Nuts, Sprouts
  • Natural sweetness, spices and condiments:
    Honey, Sea salt, Black Pepper, Cumin, Turmeric, Cinnamon, Lemon, Natural Ketchup (or make your own) and mustard and 100% fruit spreads or jams. Please make sure they are used moderately. Avoid butter, but there are some vegan olive oil based allowable spreads. 


Foods to Avoid:

  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • White Rice
  • Fried Foods
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonated Beverages
  • Foods Containing Preservatives or Additives
  • Refined Sugar
  • Sugar Substitutes
  • White Flour and All Products Using It
  • Margarine, Shortening, High Fat Products


Helpful Meal Ideas: Please read the ingredients and labels on the food products in order to analyze if the fruit or vegetable is 100% without any additives. 


Salads - 

All types of salads. All natural oil or vinegar vinaigrettes are allowed. Be creative and add kale, cabbage, apples, cranberries, raisins, carrots, jalepenos, pickles, chickpeas or whatever you like to your salads.


Cereals:

Whole Grain Cereals with almond milk you can add raisins or bananas

Oatmeal with almond milk or water


Pastas:

Whole wheat spaghetti with tomato sauce and steamed vegetables or corn on the cob. 

Chowmein (whole wheat) with vegetables and soy chunks or tofu. (Add curry for flavoring) 


Vegetables:

Vegan Chili- beans, tomatoes, soy chunks, tofu, or plant based proteins

Hash browns- parboil potatoes and yams and add onion 

Curried Vegetables : carrots, chick peas, potatoes, onions, peppers, garlic and ginger

Stir fried vegetables in olive oil

Oven baked french fries or sweet potatoes

Baked potato

Yams with cinnamon and raisins

Plantains

Stuffed peppers

Egg plant


Rice:

Brown rice with veggies

Couscous


Soups:

All veggie soups : pumpkin, okra, cabbage, spinach, bok choy, etc.


Vegetarian Beans or beans without meat in it with garlic and onions sautéed in it. 


Sandwiches:

Peanut butter and Jelly on Ezekiel 4:9 or whole wheat bread

Veggie sandwiches on whole wheat/grain bread with lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, onions and mustard

Veggie patty sandwich

Veggie, califlower crust pizza 


Snacks:

Popcorn (no butter) 

Natural baked potato chips (check ingredients, they should have only potato and sea salt... No additives) 

Seeds and Nuts  Mixes

All natural salsa dips

Hummus with veggies
